California license renewal rules at 70+

Until age 70 you can renew a California driver license online, by mail, or in person. From age 70 onward, the rules tighten:

• You must renew in person at a DMV field office. Online and by-mail renewals are no longer available, even with a clean record.
• You must pass a vision test at every renewal. Bring corrective lenses if you use them.
• You must pass a written (knowledge) test — a shorter version than the teen exam, focused on the rules most relevant to safe driving.
