Why take the California DMV test in Arabic?
California is home to more than 700,000 Arabic-speaking residents, concentrated in Los Angeles, San Diego, the San Francisco Bay Area, and the Central Valley. The California DMV recognizes this and provides the actual written exam in Arabic at every DMV office — you can request the test in Arabic when you check in for your appointment.
Practicing in Arabic before exam day matters because translation quality varies. Some unofficial practice sites use machine-translated questions that misrepresent California Vehicle Code in subtle but test-failing ways. Our Arabic test bank is curated from multiple Arabic-language sources and reviewed for accuracy — the wording matches what you'll actually see at the DMV.
What's on the California permit test?
The California written knowledge test for a Class C driver license has 46 multiple-choice questions for first-time applicants under 18, or 36 questions for applicants 18 and older. Both versions require 83% to pass — that's 38 correct out of 46, or 30 correct out of 36.
The questions cover topics from the official California Driver Handbook:
- Speed limits and the Basic Speed Law
- Right-of-way at intersections, roundabouts, and crosswalks
- Traffic signs (shapes, colors, meanings)
- Traffic signals including arrow lights and flashing reds
- Parking rules and curb colors
- Passing, lane changes, and turning
- Alcohol limits and DUI consequences
- Bicycles, pedestrians, and school buses
- Driving in adverse conditions
Our Arabic practice test library
We offer three Arabic-language practice tests, all completely free:
- Arabic Simulator Test — 40 questions, 60 minutes, 83% passing score. Mirrors the actual DMV exam format. Best for final prep.
- Arabic Practice Test #1 — 20 questions, 30 minutes, focused on traffic laws and signals.
- Arabic Practice Test #2 — 20 questions, 30 minutes, covering parking, safe driving, and emergencies.
Every question is presented in Arabic with right-to-left layout. Answer explanations are also in Arabic so you can study the reasoning, not just memorize answers. The full set covers 80 unique questions with no overlap between tests — pass all three and you'll have studied the breadth of California driving law.
How to use our Arabic practice tests effectively
- Start with one of the 20-question practice tests. They're less intimidating than the simulator and let you focus on specific topic areas.
- Read every explanation, even when you got the answer right. The explanations cite California-specific rules that may differ from your home country.
- Retake until you score 90%+. The actual exam unlocks at 83%, but 90% on practice tests builds the cushion you need for tricky wording on test day.
- Finish with the 40-question simulator. Time yourself. If you pass with 90%+, you're ready for the real thing.
- Review the handbook. Our practice tests cover the most-tested rules, but the official California Driver Handbook is the source of truth.
What to expect at the DMV on test day
When you arrive at your appointment, tell the check-in clerk you'd like to take the written exam in Arabic. They'll route you to a kiosk with the Arabic version loaded. You can also request a paper version, but most DMV offices have transitioned to digital kiosks since 2023.
You're not allowed to use a phone, notes, or any reference material during the test. You have three attempts within 12 months on the same application — if you fail three times, you have to pay the application fee again to restart.

Other resources for Arabic-speaking drivers
The official California Driver Handbook is available in Arabic — ask for it at any DMV office or request a copy when you visit. Our Arabic landing page aggregates every Arabic resource we offer, including the simulator and both practice tests.
If you're studying with family members who speak other languages, check our practice tests in Armenian, Farsi, Punjabi, Russian, Tagalog, or Vietnamese. We support 11 languages total.
